A Nassau County public bus careened out of control near the intersection of Fulton Street and Nassau Place in Hempstead at about 9:30 pm last night. Swerving to avoid a pedestrian; the bus driver lost control of the bus and crashed into a multi-family house killing a 6-year-old boy who was asleep, injuring his 7-year-old brother and injuring more than a dozen passengers and another pedestrian.
The boy was taken to Winthrop University Hospital, a local Long Island hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The injured passengers were also taken to local Long Island hospitals. The pedestrian was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. Their conditions are unknown but they did not experience life-threatening injuries.
The bus is part of the Nassau County Inter County Express (NICE) system.
